About Pomorie

The old name of the city is Anhialo. It appeared under this name in the V century BC. Most of its inhabitants were Thracians - the oldest civilisation in the Bulgarian lands. Since its founding, it has been one of the big Black Sea cities. The town's patron is St. George - his sculpture rises in the centre of Pomorie. And the eponymous Orthodox monastery, which has a spring with miraculous water, is among the most revered temples in the eastern part of the country. Today the city develops fishing, sea salt production, viticulture and winemaking, and tourism. But it also owes its fame as one of the most famous balneotherapy centres in the country.  Thanks to its location, Pomorie is known for its healing mud and lye deposits. Its salt-pans are also important. Here the "white gold" is extracted the same way as the ancestors did in ancient times. And Pomorie wines are famous far beyond the borders of the country.

The Lake

Pomorie Salt Lake has been declared a protected area and wetland of international importance. It is on the migratory route of migratory birds, known as Via Pontica. This unique lake provides food for two of the main economic activities in the city: salt mining and mud therapy, and is home to various species of birds that attract the interest of ornithologists from the country and abroad. As a healing source, the salt lake was known to the ancient Thracians, for whom it was sacred. Today, the rational use of the lake's wealth reflects the new world trend - "Health from Nature". Both before and now, the famous estuarine mud is extracted from it. It is used for healing procedures and treatment of various diseases and is the premium source for the spas of local tourist complexes. On this basis, Pomorie owes its popularity to one of the state leaders in balneology. The Pomorie healing mud is no less high quality than the Dead Sea's one! The lake's lye and seawater are extracted at 70 meters below sea level - with a salinity of almost 90%. They are also used successfully in medicine.

Salt Pans

The "white gold" extraction has a close connection with the lake. The technology of salt-extraction dates since time immemorial. Some historians point out that the salt pans near Pomorie existed before the town's founding. The centuries-old experience in this ancient industry passes down from fathers to sons.

The Museum

The only Salt Museum in Eastern Europe presents this ancient technology, where visitors can see all the authentic technological operations applied today. The museum displays models and original equipment and tools, old topographic maps, a collection of photographs tracing the history of the local salt mining since the beginning of the last century. Here you may purchase various cosmetic products of raw materials from Pomorie Salt Lake.

Thracian Dome Tomb

Traces of the Thracian presence in these lands can be found in the well-preserved Thracian domed tomb near Pomorie from the III-IV century. It is believed to have served as a mausoleum of a wealthy Thracian family and is associated with rituals dedicated to the Sun cult. It is the largest ancient domed tomb in the country and the only one of its kind in the Balkans.

St. George Monastery

Much later, in the 18th century, the monastery of St. George was founded, famous for its magical spring. According to legend, a local Ottoman ruler fell ill with a sickness for which the then doctors could not find a cure. However, a monk gave him water to drink from the miraculous spring that gushed on the site of today's temple. When he began to drink from the spring, the ruler got healed. As a sign of gratitude to fate, he accepted Christianity with his whole family and built a small chapel, which later grew into a monastery. Today the temple is one of the most visited sites here.
